Brands That Rock: What Business Leaders Can Learn from the World of Rock and Roll

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Authors: Roger Blackwell and Tina Stephan

I’m an audiophile, former DJ, guitar “owner” (I’m cautious to say I’m much of a “guitarist” in the presences of all the folks I know who are true masters of the six-string) and love a good live show that packs a wallop, brings a tear, gives goosebumps or just plain rocks hard. So this one was pretty much aimed right at my ears. It’s been out for six years, but worth a revisit recently while working on the development of a music-driven global peace initiative. Rock on….

Thank You Bear [Greg Foley]

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

I read this one to my daughter. Its wisdom is as important to the realization of an entrepreneur’s dream as anything you’ll find in the Business section of a bookstore. More at: www.thankyoubear.com

Values-Driven Business: How to Change the World, Make Money, and Have Fun [Ben Cohen, Mal Warwick]

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Social Venture Network has published some spot-on business philosophy books, and this one, co-written with Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry’s, is a tight read on harnessing employee and brand values to effect change and bring success, even with the Triple Bottom Line.

Booksmart: Rework [Jason Fried, David H. Hansson]

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Just read this. Love it. One of those books that sounds like I’m reading my own words. Totally agree with most everything in here. Part philosophical handbook and part how-to. But mainly quick bursts on short subjects ranging from reasons “not” to have meetings, to the benefits of team members in different cities (I’m a big fan, that’s part of our model at Daily Brand, not localized to just the talent down the street, but wherever they may reside), to all the reasons that lighter, nimbler, more innovative black-box-thinking companies are, collectively, the entrepreneurial engine to refuel the Economy. ~ Colin Mangham

41grAYBhp6L._SL500_SX85_Suppose this falls in the category of “perennial classic”. I’ve read it several times since I was a kid. Just happens to be on my bedside table presently.

True to Yourself: Leading a Values-Based Business [Mark Albion]

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Another Social Venture Network book I’ve actually read a couple of times and quoted in my MBA essays and some blogs. Here again the Triple Bottom Line (people, planet, profit) takes center stage, only this time with a focus on following your bliss, finding and harnessing your life purpose (perhaps considerably easier than that sounds) and connecting with people who share your interests and passions pursuant to business success.

Tate Modern: The Handbook [Iwona Blazwick, Simon Wilson]

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Compact and visual retelling of the early days and progressive development of the Tate, along with some general catalog top-lines on some of the major artists in the collection. I first read this when we were endeavoring to launch a museum of contemporary art in Beijing and eventually got it off the ground (admittedly just barely) in the Causeway Bay area of Hong Kong. A longer story for another venue and occasion….

Booksmart: Brand Sense [Martin Lindstrom]

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Martin Lindstrom got an early and quite definitive jump on being the official spokesperson for five-sense marketing. I read this when it first came out while researching some essays for my MBA, and revisited recently as we’ve been exploring olfactory marketing at Daily with Dr. Koan Baysa. He’s linked with some of the top chemists and Noses in the fragrance industry, is a regular contributor to aRUDE magazine on related topics, and once curated a contemporary art show featuring a number of curious scents one could sample from beneath a domed enclosure. Anyway, Lindstrom’s “Brand Sense” is a great primer. ~ Colin Mangham
